Urgent Electorol Roll Issues

I find myself in a situation in which i am not sure how to deal with. Long story short i moved address about 20 years or so ago. Before then i only lived at one other address.

On my credit report one letter of name is mispelt i.e if my name is Adam, it is spelt Adab. This only shows up on my previous address for one year on the electorol roll. My new address for the past 20 years has my correct spelling.

I have contacted experian, equifax all the credit agencies and they all told me to contact the counci and get them to contact them with the updated information. I contacted the council and they have confirmed my spelling is incorrect but they are not allowed legally to change it! They cannot amend the record for that period in 2000 and i have to live with the consquences.

After going back and forth for one hour we are at a standstil and i would appreciate any help in getting this resolved.

My concern is any search during that period will see two different names - how badly is this gonna effect me and obtaining credit, services etc!

I cannot believe i am getting punished for someone elses mistake!

Honestly I'm also not sure that they can sort it out for you, I would suggest maybe try to get in touch with Experian or Equifax again and explain the situation to the fullest extent. I wish you all the best.

Because you are asking them to change historical data, i.e. you want them to change the past, and they can't do that. You should have pointed out the error at the time and they would have corrected it, but it's far too late now.

I have never noticed this error until now. Infact, ive been a member for many years but i recently left and joined again this month. For all the years i was members with experian, equifax etc these errors were not there. Experian still have my correct details so i dont no why EQUIFAX have it different. ITs only equfiax that have this error. I have checked with the council and i can confirm they have it the same as equfax

Your point about not changing historical data makes no sense. Credit agencies always change historical data if there is an error! IVe had defaults removed, searches removed and details changed which were all from the past

What effect on your life is this minor error having?!
    You haven't defined something material.

That said, you could insist they correct it as the Data Protection Act would have required that they keep data accurate - like any other data controller.

I am just worried it will have a negative effect with applications checking my current details with previous ones. I.e name change. It maybe me being paranoid but i just want to get it resolved. Its an error and should not be there

Can you please explain what process i can do in getting this changed as i cannot find any information online at all how to resolve this. Ive emailed ICO but not holding much hope from there
