Firstly, I know exactly how overwhelming it feels when you finally pull your head out of the sand and face the facts. It's terrifying. I was a single mum of 2 primary age children when I realised I was in a mess. I spoke to Stepchange and they were amazing. My initial plan said it would take something like 15 years to clear my debt. I did it in 6 and am now debt free with the very last default having disappeared from my record this week.
My children are now at university (well, the youngest will be in September), and we have had a happy time with plenty of special memories. We are all very close - and my eldest is managing her finances at uni brilliantly!
Some of mydebt was racked up taking the children on expensive holidays that they now can't remember, but some of our best memories we made were on days out with a picnic made of bits and bobs from the cupboard or going to the park.
You'll get through it and your children will be absolutely fine. It may feel tough at times, but just take it in baby steps and you will get there. It's worth it, just stay strong.
