Electronic payslips

Hi,

I know that most companies have moved to sending payslips via email or making them available online, but what happens if you don't know how to use a computer.

My mother hasn't received a payslip for a couple of months now as her employer has decided to go paperless for this. But she doesn't know how to use a computer, or have access to a printer. She told her employer this and their responsponse was to get family to show her how to use it. Surely if you don't know how to use a computer they have to provide a paper copy. I should as add that my father does use a computer, but just browsing, even for emails he waits until I'm up before sorting them out, but I usually only get up at weekends.

Unfortunately no if they want to provide it electronically they can.

You may want to re-phrase this slightly as it can be read as you stay in bed Monday to Friday and only leave your bed on Saturday and Sunday

I visit them usually every weekend.


Is it not a case that payslips have to be made available to you before or on the day of payment. Even if I did set her up an email address, she couldnt access until I visit. I'm just curious as to how they can force this on someone that can't access her payslip by herself. She doesn't like the idea of having to share exactly how much she earns by getting me to have to do all for her.

The payslip would be available for her to access on the appropriate day. It is just that she is choosing not to learn how to access it

From the gov website...

“Employers can choose whether they provide printed or electronic (online) payslips.”

Surely if your there once every seven days then you could get the payslip for her every payday or weekend after?

I have tried getting her on to it before, but she just couldn't get on to it. Even her mobile is just for calls, if she needs a text sent, someone else has to do it for her. She's 65, and just isn't good with any technology

easiest solution I think here is when you go round to see your parents find the login details and run it through with your mother as and when its due and then eventually get her to do it on her own while you stand aside.

Failing that you'll just have to find the details and print it off on her behalf. Or see if she is willing to attend "basic computer courses" which you may be able to get through the local library.

thanks for your replies, and I know that it seems like i'm asking it again, but I have read on a post, that "the responsibility is on the employer to make the payslip available to the employee. If the employee does not know where to find the payslip or has no computer access to it, then it has not been “given” to the employee". Surely if she has no email address to give the employer, they have no way to give her the payslip via email, so they would have to revert to paper?

You’ve already been told. They have made it available to her. She is choosing not to access it. I don’t know what ‘post’ you’ve read but the government guidelines don’t mention anything about ‘if the employee doesn’t have a computer then it hasn’t been given...’
