Can I have this default removed from credit reference file?

Options
Hi

I have taken my head out of the sand the last few days and had a good look at mine and husbands credit files.

We have paid off £17,880 of unsecured debt since 2008 after getting into a lot of financial trouble. We have £7,990 remaining. We have a DMP with StepChange.

I have been preparing CCA requests to the 3 remaining accounts. Although we defaulted on them all at the same time all of the debts have vanished from the credit file now. Except 1. This has been lodged as a default in 2018 - 10 years since paying for it. It has been added by PRA who I presume now owns the debt.

Could anyone help me work out how to get rid of this? The original lender was barclaycard - account opened in 1998 and defaulted 2008.

Many Thanks

If it's a second default for the same account, tell them to remove it.

If the account was defaulted in 2008, then it cannot be defaulted for a second time. The account should have been automatically removed from your credit file sometime during 2014.

  • Im not sure if its a second default or if it has never been defaulted before. Im not sure why, so long after breaking the terms of the original agreement it wouldn't be defaulted years ago?

Also, sorry, an error in my first post - Ive just looked again at checkmyfile and it was 2016 when it first appeared as a default. prior to that there were entries saying DM for debt management and current status is US (unknown status)

If you think the default should be earlier, then again, tell them to amend it.
  • Tell who? The credit reference agency or the debt collector?

    Whoever applied the default.
  • Woop!

1 phonemail with barclaycard (original debt) and they have agreed to change the default to June 2013 which will mean it will be dropping off the file in 2 months rather than 3 years!

    So glad I did it.
