New Barclays PINsentry authentication cards

Are PINsentry authentication cards sent out automatically by Barclays when they expire or do you have to contract the bank to get one?

Is that different to the little machines you put your debit card in?
I've got a Barclays account and one of those machines though I rarely use it but have never been sent an authentication card.

Seems to be a card you get in lieu of a debit card, I had not heard of them
    • If you do not have a debit card that is Chip & PIN enabled, we'll send you an authentication card to use in the card reader.

I've had an Authentication Card from Barclays for many years, since they first introduced PINsentry.

I had to request a replacement when my last one expired. There was an option to order one online, but I did this repeatedly until I was blue in the face and it never turned up. In the end, I asked in a branch and they ordered one for me which actually turned up.

Edit: Just to answer the other points - you only get an Authentication Card if you do not have a Debit Card for any of your Barclays accounts. It functions in the same was as a Debit Card in the PINsentry reader, and is also used to set up the Barclays App (you have to pretend it's a Debit Card, and enter its details when the App asks for your Debit Card details).
