If you're at home, it's not hard to tell, is it? There will be the square plastic boxes with a switch around the place where the storage heaters used to be, and a 2nd consumer unit connected to them.

The power switches are still there however don't appear to have any power going to them. No idea if they are still usable or not. I get the impression that by getting the new meter installed it wouldn't be suitable for storage heaters anymore.

Swop within SP to something better NOW.

SP are saying I am on the best tariff however might do some research as their advice hasn't exactly been great so far.

No, you will have moved to a single rate meter and would need an e7 re-fitting for cheap rate for storage heating. You may even have been on something better than e7 that was legacy, but you cannot get that back now (and they are usually not priced well so it really depends on usage).

Can you not get gas? That would have been the best idea!

It's their Standard Online rate. Doesn't appear to be tied in and on the bill it shows as 15.490p per KWh

I believe we can yeah but don't have the cash to get it all installed at the moment. Will be looking at it going forward if we decide to stay here long term

  • I live in a no gas area. In ground floor corner flat with floorboards (nothing under them). Very cold. Have storage heaters which just do not heat the flat at night. I can’t put any more in as the ring circuit won’t take them.
Am thinking of an electric boiler to replace the immersion heater. I can’t afford to run this and just use hot water provided by a kettle and electric shower.
I cannot get consistent independent advice so would like opinions of what to do. Please remember I have no gas supply and cannot afford to have one put in. Thank you hoping someone can help (don’t get too technical it’ll go way above me!).

Storage heaters do not use the ring circuit, they each have their own independent radial circuit so more can be installed.
An electric boiler is probably the most expensive to run form of heating available and will also be expensive to install.
The best option is to insulate, prevent draughts, learn to use the storage heaters correctly and maybe install some more if necessary.

Hot water for what? For hand washing an oversink water heater could be an option.

Presumably there's a floor covering. Depending on what you've got and if you can diy insulating between your floor covering and floorboards could make a big difference. Drauftproofing where the skirting meets the floor can make a big difference on flooring with voids beneath them.
