Thankful that it's unlikely this will be taken further and I'll go back to my usual local opticians where I can happily pay more and be treated better.

Why not go back to Specsavers, pay the £25 for the test, get a copy of your prescription (which they must give you) and make sure that you tell them them that you will be going elsewhere to purchase you glasses and the reason why.

It's so often the case with shops and service providers. And you'll be helping to (hopefully) keep their business going.

Of course, I've been going to my local one for 20 years, just went to Specsavers for a cheap backup pair. Would much rather support a local business especially when they have a fully transparent pricing structure and offers :)

Although I initially said to just pay for the eye test (which may or may not be true) I am more on the fence now. I checked my local Specsavers and the offer on mine is the following (I'm in Scotland so eye tests are free):-
FREE NHS-FUNDED EYE EXAM plus £40 off designer glasses
    Valid until 30 June 2019.

Clicking on the info button gives:-
Applies to a complete pair of designer glasses from the £99 to £169 ranges. Valid until the date shown. Present voucher at time of purchase. Cannot be exchanged for cash or used with other offers or eye-health clinic appointments. One per person, at named Specsavers stores only. Free NHS-funded eye examination funded by the Scottish Government, subject to eligibility, and available in Scotland only.

I tried two random postcodes in England and got the same message that you got (ie no specified price range).

So the English offer is wrong in my opinion as you shouldn't have to travel in (possibly taking time off work) just to find out additional T&C's.

I don't know if it's worthwhile to yourself to chase this up? There is a 'Contact Us' page but for everything but the telephone number they say everything gets passed on to your local shop with no indication if anyone else sees it. The telephone number is 0345 2020 241

They have offices in numerous places, I think you'd need the Guernsey one for a postal address:-

If its any help, I had been going to specsavers for many years but a couple of years ago at a time when money was very short, they seemed very expensive even for the cheapest pair of frames. I bought them, they fell apart within a month.

I went to Asda Opticians next, no 'conveyer belt' style of dealing with you, everyone was much friendlier, no constant trying to sell you more expensive things, much cheaper as you don't have to pay extra for things Specsavers charge for and the frames at the same price were much much better quality.

However, they don't do a voucher for a free test.

I struggle to understand why anyone would even consider paying anything to a company who inticed them into their shop under false pretences with a totally bogus bait and switch.
If the OP does she might as well wear a label on her back saying sucker.
OP can be pretty sure no one is going to be going to court for £25

  • As the OP has already had the eye test, they can pay the £25 and get a copy of their prescription.
They can then use this prescription to get glasses from another optician without the need to pay for, arrange and attend another examination.
