Empty retail shop

With online shopping and out of town shopping becoming more popular, there are more empty retail units.
I recall my local council did a compulsory purchase on one and turned it into flats.
I have noticed an empty shop locally and I searched the land registry to find it owned by LAND ACQUISITIONS LIMITED (Co. Regn. No. 2978328) of 3 Greengate, Cardale Park, Harrogate, Company Status, Dormant Company. Is there a reason why a company would just buy a property and leave it empty for years? I thought I might send them a letter, to see if they have over-looked its existence.

Possibly waiting to acquire other property and amalgamate them for a larger development?

    Pretty unlikely.

Is it one of the properties they've mortgaged?

"Dormant company" just means not actively trading. It's a holding shell for the properties. They won't have "overlooked" the existence, they're land-banking - waiting for values to rise to the point that the land is worth selling to developers. If they can purchase a number of adjoining properties, so much the better, because they can then sell a single large plot, rather than a miscellany of small onesy-twosy plots.

This is the owner of "75%+" of the shares in Land Acquisitions Ltd

It may well be that they're owned on behalf of a developer client.

Send a letter to the council to get it bought and turn it into something useful

I will at least clean up the shop doorway, I will see if more can be done, the shop front has tiles that have fallen off and posters on the windows.

On Rightmove at its last sale it was listed as "Semi-Detached, Freehold, Residential", there is a flat upstairs, which looks rundown and unlived-in. How are these properties treated in regard to council tax?
Would it be subject to pay extra council tax, as it is empty?

That depends on the policies of the local council, they all have different rules.
