Hi all

Just after some advice as I'm not sure what to do, my fixed term tariff with Scottish Power ends on 30th April, I'm due to move house on 26th May, I don't want to pay over the odds when my fixed rate ends and normally I would fix again, what are my options here does anyone know?

Thanks!

See if switching to the cheapest no exit fee tariff is cost effective for the last month you live there

If you find a tariff that's cheaper than your current tariff then you can switch now without any penalty from sp

The deal usually stays with the house, doesn't it? So it doesn't matter that you'll be moving.

Not if it's a fixed term deal. If you move out then you would have exit charges to pay if the contract included exit charges

Simpler to just pay the standard tariff for a month .

I'm not sure that 28 days worth of energy at a penny or two per kwh extra will make a tremendous difference, especially in May when most people's energy consumption is reducing anyway.

However only the OP can decide whether it's worth the hassle of changing tariffs to save perhaps £10-£15.

I'm not suggesting that £10-£15 is to be squandered, but sorting out a new DD with another provider, having to pay off the existing supplier and the fact that changing will take up to three weeks unless the OP stays with the same provider seems like a lot of effort for little reward. However if you do decide to stay, make sure you send in a meter reading on the last day of your fix so you dont end up with random estimates when you go onto the SVT. Check your final bill carefully.

There would also be the possible problem of chasing two final bills, one from the present provider and one from the new one when they move. You'd have to keep careful track of meter readings to make sure that the appropriate amount of energy was attributed to the correct accounts/suppliers and hop that nothing goes wrong, especially when you are trying to sort out a third supplier when you move in the new place and take on the deemed supplier there.

There's also the possibly a 4th if you decide change suppliers or get a better deal there as well just after you move in

Any new deal will probably cost more than the existing deal anyway because all energy prices have risen so any perceived savings might be less than anticipated
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

The additional cost for 26 days is only going to be between £5-£12 for most users on Scottish Powers standard rate.

Surely that all depends on consumption/weather etc, we don't know how big/small a user the OP is, but it's irrelevant

The OP came through this money saving website for advice on how to pay the least!
  • Thanks everyone for your thoughts, I should probably explain a bit more about the circumstances, we are due to exchange on our new property on 17th April, the house we are moving into needs to be rewired before we move in, my husband is an electrician so it’ll be fairly straight forward, however, because we need time to sort the new property we are going to pay to stay in our current house which is rented until 26th May, based on some of the replies it sounds like we may just be better to just move onto the standard tariff until we move out, I have a small credit in the account at the moment so it may not end up costing us much more, as I’ll have a lot of other things to think about I don’t want it to cause extra hassle, thanks all
