The Ubuntu guides for v18 seem to say that Secure Boot can be left Enabled - needless to say I’ve tried it both Enabled/Disabled and still no hard disk recognised for installation. It’s not the usb boot version of Ubuntu either as I tested it on another machine (it can be run in demo mode) and it sees the hard disc just fine. That’s defo UEFI also.

There should be another entry in the bios that is uefi or Legacy. I suspect if you switch it to legacy then it will work, but windows 10 will not. You probably will have to shrink and repartition your drive to install the second os into an empty area.

VB does limit the performace a little and may not be as good at graphics as the native mode. It also does not like uncommon hardware cards. Once you have installed VB and installed your virtual os, remember to download and add the 'Tools" after.

Hoverer all said and done it is another vote for VB.

Also if your bios supports virtualisation, enable those features too.

Thanks for all the replies. It’s turned out to be academic as I couldn’t get Win 8.1 to recognise the hard disk. It seems to have beeen a very luck escape.
I’ll give VB a go - I’ve never used it before. Sound interesting.
What this (Win 8.1) is all about is that I love using Corel Draw X4 that defo won’t work on Win 10 - I tried to do that recently and it resulted in a complete recovery of Win 10 as CD mucked up the whole Start Menu. Upgrading CD X4 would bankrupt me, it’s very expensive.

Btw. As I thought I could possibly run Ubuntu instead, I’d give that a try. But again it won’t recognise the hard disk for installation. (It can see the contents of the Win 10 drive in demo mode but not installation. It’s odd.) The PC I am on now is running Ubuntu and I have Windows 7 and 10 VMs on it (for running M$ Office), along with one running XP for some older software.

I'm using VMware Player, which I prefer to Virtual Box, but either should do.

I also have a Windows 10 PC which has VMware on it.

The VM method is not only good for running older software, but also for keeping things separate and can be handy if you want to move things to a new physical PC, as you can just copy over the VM as-is and run it there.

Is your installation flash drive formatted with FAT32 and utilising the GPT partition scheme? Use Rufus to create suitable installation media.
Have you created another partition for the new OS?
Did you also disable Fast Boot?

The other option is to change the partition style on the current HDD to MBR.
  • Thanks for the fantastic replies, it’s greatly appreciated.
I’m now experimenting with Oracles’s Virtual Box and it’s totally amazing. I’ll try also the suggested VMware to see how that goes too.
    Cheers
