How do you come up with a company name please? I want something catchy, but not too cheesy (if that makes sense)
I'm going to do portable appliance testing, but want to avoid using my initials, or PAT in the title?
Any pointers or advice greatly recieved

Don't overthink it - if you are working on your own, people will know you personally and associate the work with you, not a random company name. Your name, your reputation (both good and bad!)
Check domain names and social media names that are available. Think about what people will search on Google for, and so that when you send an email to them it will be obvious what you are offering - so don't go for something like the team names you see on the Apprentice.0 -

People will be looking for a business they can trust when choosing a testing company. So as said above try to keep away from random names that people cannot connect with. The best way to engender trust is to use your own name in the business name. "Fred Bloggs Testing" or "Bloggs Testing" - that sort of thing. There are few small companies you might have heard which were named after the person who started the company: eg. Sainsbury, Marks and Spencer, John Lewis.0 -
Good advice from Sparkermarketing.
I agree it is a good idea to avoid using PAT in your business name, but you need the name to make it clear what it is that you do. PAT is a very particular kind of service, with a very particular kind of customer that wants to buy it.
You could twist the idea of PAT around to find a memorable name. "Uncle Pat's Testing Services" sprang to mind. Other ideas might be: "Pat's the way I like it" or "Pat'll do".The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0 -
tacpot's veering into the cheesy I think - I'm seeing hairdresser names!

Power Test
Actually you're best just going with
localtownappliancetesting eg. Norwichappliance or Norwichelectrical or Norwichtesting or Norwichappliancetesting0 -
Also check that there is not a company in existence doing the same thing you do with a similar name. Remember also the limited company name can be whatever you want it to be as you can have a trading name that is completely different.May you find your sister soon Helli.

I agree with all the other replies here, use something that's got a personal meaning like your name or even your town name. I used to have WW Plastering, I am also setting up a digital marketing company called "Gingerman Digital" can you guess why?0

Did you drink too much of the ginger wine when plastering?A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

See what people search for in Google. What terms do they use exactly? Choose on of the main ones then add a word in front e.g. a place, a name, animal, made up word, doesn't matter as long as catchy and memorable. If you can, go with two words starting with the same letter.0
