  • Ran half a pint of vinegar, half a cap of washing liquid and most of a small tub of bicarb through the machine last night on a 90 degree wash, having already scrubbed the inside, seals, drawer and filter down with vinegar. Could eat my dinner off it now :D

There were a few minutes where I thought foam was going to explode all over the kitchen but it seems to have worked pretty well - left the drawer and door open last night and only the faintest whiff this morning. First load (duvet cover) has come out smelling clean and fresh, so I'll count that as a success. Now to catch up with the washing!

  • I tried to get some marker pen ink out of a white item by soaking it in acetone, but then forgot about it and it all dried up with a chromatography effect. I expect I'll have to re-apply a solvent, but then what is best to was it all out - the loosened ink and the solvent?

Use some more acetone (nail varnish remover) but instead of just a "pour and hope" method :) put the item on top of a good wad of kitchen roll/old white (clean) rag then apply the acetone to another rag/kitchen roll/cotton wool pad and "push" the acetone (and the marker pen, hopefully) through to the underneath piece of rag. Blot, don't rub. If the pen mark hasn't "set" by now, you should see it come through on to the bottom piece of rag - so keep moving the item to a clean area of the piece underneath.
Keep the room well ventilated and if/when the pen is removed, I always give the area a rub with Fairy liquid and rinse and repeat. Then wash as normal. Oh, and then apply lots of hand cream (to my now dry hands) :)

Hope this makes sense and that it helps! Good luck :)
