I had a similar problem a while back. I know, the stuff honks to high heaven! I think hanging it up and airing it as much as you can is your best bet. The smell will eventually go.I don't know of a way to get rid of it other than to just let it evaporate as much as possible.

Bicarb of soda is sucks up smells - maybe a good soaking in a bicarb and water solution? Otherwise I agree with j.e.j. on the airing.

  • I wasn't paying enough attention on Friday, clearly, as I put on a wash and only as I was taking it back out of the machine that a rag with white spirits on had infiltrated the drum (translation: hubs had been painting and chucked it in without my noticing).

All of that load smelled horrible, so I ran it again on a hot wash. Still stinks of white spirits. Ran the empty machine on a hot wash (twice!) with washing liquid, and still can't get rid of the smell out of the machine. Left the door open overnight and it has reduced, but I really don't want to start putting clothes in again until it's gone. I also have a pile of horrible, wet clothing to deal with.

Anyone have any ideas? Would washing soda do it? Five gallons of vinegar? A very late bonfire? :rotfl:

  • You could try doing a service wash, that's what they recommend when it smells fusty. Put it on the hottest cycle without anything in, just the water and then leave the door and the detergent tray open afterwards. I don't know how effective that would be but worth a try, good luck, Cheers Lyn.

Have you taken out the powder drawer and washed it in hot soapy water, and wiped the inside of the glass door? Eventually the white spirits will evaporate completely, but not much help to you now, I know. I'd be tempted to try another empty wash with vinegar in the dispenser.

There are some ideas on this thread that may help:

I'll add this thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

  • Hi, i normally buy a 'service it' cleaner and run this through on a 90 degree wash. After every wash i take the drawer out (store in the machine) and wife the rubber and door dry. This prevents the build up of 'musty' smells. Hopefully the service it stuff will work on the white spirit smell too?

  • Thanks all - will pick up some more vinegar in the morning and give the seals a good scrub before another go at 90 degrees. Fingers crossed!
