    1) your employer has been paying for PMI cover as an employee benefit for you.
    2) PMI is designed to pay out for long term medical problems for employees so their employees are less out of pocket than just being on benefits.
    3) an employee on PMI cannot be fired. The PMI will just keep paying out until you return to work or reach retirement age.

    Your reasons for not applying for it are very spurious. You're only denying yourself (& family) monies you're entitled to that your employer has been generous enough to provide.

    I'm just paranoid because I've never been off work this long before and I've heard so many horror stories from a previous job where gp reports where used to make people leave the job as they were deemed unfit and even cases where people had to quit after being told they had to return when they weren't able to even with the support of their gp.

    Although that was through occupational health which I assume is very different from this and perhaps these stories where just that stories!!

    So thanks for your take on the situation.
