Energy Supplier in a new build

Hi

Ive just moved into a new build (rented) and got a letter from powergen stating they were my electricity supplier and to call them to find a package best suited for me.

However im a bit reluctant to go with them due to hearing bad things about them.

Do i have to sign up with powergen or can i go to another provider?

Regards
Daz

    Hi Daz,

PGen supply your property due to a previous occupier signing the property over to them. You are liable for payment of electricity (gas is the same) to them from your date of occupation. So, take a reading quickly and give them a call to generate an account.

You can then choose to change Suppliers from there or stay with them. Your choice.

Either way though, you will be liable from the moving in date onwards to them, or up to your change of supplier date if you choose to switch.

The new build I'm moving into is also with Powergen, but I want to go with Scottish Power. If we want to change elec suppliers as soon as we enter the property... would it be best to call Powergen and ask them to put u on their "Standard" tariff as opposed to a better suited tariff (as it might lock you into a contract??)?

Either way Daz is their customer but at this stage he is not locked into anything. It's likely that he will move in with a suitable tariff set up by the builder based on how the property is heated.

He can make a choice to stay or swap on this basis.

you don't need to worry about being locked into a contract with powergen on any of their tariffs. all their residential tariffs have no tie ins and no cancellation fees. you'll probably find their online package is cheapest. that means that you'll be charged at the cheapest rate until the time the new supplier takes over.
word of advice, make sure you call powergen with meter readings for the day that you moved in so that they can set an accoutn up in your name.

Important thing always os to take meter reads!!!! So take one now and one a week until you get your first bill from someone!

Second thing you are liable for what you use, but you dont have to sign up with anyone. I mean you are not forced to. So if you dont like powergen dont sign up with them! But you MUST immediatly find the supplier you want and sign up with them, otherwise you will be "THe Occupier" on the powergen books and they can (and will) charge you any rate they choose.

When you find your new supplier as long as your balance with Powergen is under a certain amount, your new supplier can take over supply and your Occupier account balance with Powergen will be due by you.

I am a Qualified Executive with the Utility Warehouse (interest declared). I would be happy to show you our fantastic packages if you want - email or IM me.

Hedgebetter, the occupier is 100% liable for any utility the use under Ofgem's Deemed Contract terms. So, Daz will have no choice but to be with PGen until he decides to change. Please be aware that Daz has stated that he has taken legal ownership of the property, making him the bill payer so he can only choose to stay or go but they cannot backdate his registration date to his occupation date.

He/she has posted on a few (declaring interest) and the board guide (Browntoa) has spotted it on another thread.
