BPO and credit ref agencies

Hello everyone

I left university 8 years ago, and this week I received a letter from a company called BPO debt collections telling me I owe Student Loans Company £800 and to call them to make arrangements to repay it. So instead, I called Student Loans Company and they said they overpaid me 8 years ago, and have tried writing to me in the past about it but got no reply.

I pay my student loan back every month through my wages. This is so frustrating.

I’ve sent the ‘prove it’ letter to BPO. But, I have some questions I’m hoping MSE can answer:

- Can BPO report this debt to credit ref agencies? They haven’t in the last 8 years.

- Can BPO pursue a default/CCJ order?

- If I come to an agreement to repay this monthly with BPO, can/will they report my ‘repayment’ plan to cred ref agencies?

I’m really concerned how this surprise could impact my credit score...

Many thanks
D

Student loans are not normally reported to the CRA’s, but yes they can take you to court for non payment, and a resulting CCJ will affect your credit file.

If you have an overpayment you need to address that issue.

Would they still be able to apply for a CCJ, even after 8 years?
