W10 - what's the difference between "File History" and "system protection"?

I know what File History is but have always been a bit vague about "system protection". Does the latter only backup (data) files when a restore point is created or is it more clever than that (to be honest I thought retore points were all about saving the state of Windows system files - so it covers data files too?).

System Protection was previously known as System Restore in previous versions of Windows. It is only on if you upgraded to 10 from 7 or 8 - as a clean install of 10 it is off by default.

Like its System Restore counterpart it doesn't affect data, only key parts of Windows like system files and the registry. So don't bank on it to save your work - back that up yourself.
