Ranking on price
We analysed the prices of a large range of insurance quotes given by Compare The Market, Confused.com, Gocompare and MoneySupermarket.
Step 1. We check how many times each comparison site returned the cheapest or within £5 of the cheapest quote.
Step 2. We rank the comparison sites based on their 'score' in the first category.
Step 3. We assess how often each comparison gave a unique cheapest quote, ie, not just equal cheapest with a higher-scoring comparison.
Step 4. We alter the order to see if it's possible to increase the speed with which you access the cheapest quotes.
Here are the latest scores
This month's results show that MoneySupermarket gives the cheapest quote 58% of the time.
Get a quote from MoneySupermarket and Confused.com and you'll increase your chances of getting a cheaper quote to 83%.
To improve your chances of getting the cheapest quote 96% of the time, get a quote from MoneySupermarket, Confused.com and Gocompare – and if you've time, get a quote from Compare The Market as well.0 -
I might add that this time around I have tested out the 'optimal time to get a car insurance quote'

My experience is that this is exactly how it seems for me - I now have a fab quote 20 days before renewal, it was around £150 more 10 days ago on the same site. Used incognito mode in browser and also different ermail addresses.
Could be coincidence of course but im going for the cheaper one today.0 -
Excellent information.
So do you think In a case that if you need the insurance for seven days time.. it might be more beneficial to select the 20 day start date for the cover, get the insurance quote and go straight to the insurer, then correct the details.. all the while you have a good price ?0 -
I tend to use the cash back sites, although they don't always come back as the cheapest by the time you add the cash back they quite often areThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

This, for me.
Check the comparison sites, then check who's offering cashback (eg: Aviva usually is on topcashback) and try that directly.
If cashback makes it cheaper I'll do it.0 -
I’m trying to get some quotes now. I’m only purchasing in one weeks time and I know the make and model, but the number plate could potentially change ... to avoid last minute price high quotes I’m getting them now... but what would be suggested when you’re not sure of the number plate0

1) - If you see a decent quote on a comparison site - click the info button and note the 'Quote Number' and telephone number of the insurer. That quote should be valid for 30 days - if you do a quote tomorrow that looks more expensive then the cheaper quote should still be fine.
2) Is the registration changing due to a personal registration number being taken off it - if so then your quotes should be fine for the vehicle but you will probably need to call them up.0 -
What I have found with comparison sites is that they are really inaccurate. The quotes draw you in but when you click through even though you've set your options by the time you've looked at what they offer it's not what you stated and ends up more expensive.
For me Aviva have been the cheapest for years. They used to give me a quote and then I'd use topcashback as it was invariably cheaper but they have now got wise to this and the renewal reflects the price with the money off.
I needed business insurance just before renewal and they did it on the phone free of charge.
I've also changed cars a couple of times and used the online portal to do this without any additional charges or admin charges.
Aviva don't appear on comparison sites but I always check them first anyway.
The only drawback with this is the excess for using a non approved repairer (cheapest I assume) is higher. So if you have a bump and want to use your dealer rather than the nominated Car Clinic you'll initially pay a higher excess.0 -
The reason the number plate may change is because I’m going to see the car next week, and although I think I’ve picked out the one online I want, their are a few at the dealership I like, so it could potentially change after viewing the car.the make and the ModeI I know. I’m just hoping to get an insurance quote now to lock it in, or near enough lock it in to avoid doing it like an hour before I want to drive it away0
