We have never had a mobile phone but my wife is thinking of getting one.

Probably Samsung Galaxy J4 plus from Tesco.

If she buys an unlocked phone I understand it will need a Sim to make it work and Sims can be purchased from Gif Gaf, Plusnet and others and the contract for the Sim is likely to last 12 months.

Question is when the new Sim is put into the unlocked phone does the phone then become locked to Gif Gaf, Plusnet and/or the network it is using?.

The phone will remain unlocked no matter what Sim card you put in it.

The two most common length of Sim only contracts are 30 days rolling and 12 months. The 12 months one are usually slightly cheaper for the same allowances.

You can also get the Pay As You Go sims which have no contract and no credit check, you just top them up when you need to. Depending on how often you use a mobile this can be significantly cheaper.

Because I hardly make any phone calls at all and on the odd occasion where I need to it is now significantly cheaper to use the mobile (Three's 321 tariff) than my landline, which charges 22p just to set it up and then 13p per minute on top of that.
