RSJ or extend floor joists

Options
Hi

We have a differing view of what to do for a kitchen-dining knock through.
The surveyor has drawn up plans for removing a wall. The wall supports three joints in the floor above and the plans involve replacing these with closer spaced 5 joists which are longer, and therefore reach the support of another wall. The second wall is about 15cm further along.

Our preferred builder took a look under the floorboards upstairs, saw the massive tangle of pipes where the joists are and decided it would be a right load of hassle. He has instead suggested an RSJ to support from below. Any thoughts on how to end this standoff?

Many thanks.

Your in the wrong section, but the RSJ is cleaner and probably cheaper to install than ripping the floor up, re routing pipes and cables. You can tell the builder to do it your way but expect a bigger bill
