I haven't quoted any of that part in case you wanted to edit - with a mind to how some people love digging through post history for any ammo they can find
As an aside, I needed to get a copy recently and was only around £10. I was surprised as it used to cost a lot more!
Thanks, good point although it's long done and dusted (and the copy was made without any intention to deceive or defraud). I doubt that we will be able to obtain an official copy if we ever need it, as the details aren't on the GRO systems.0 -

That's been in the news (or on here) quite recently. It's only £11 per copy. It used to be more for a single copy but additional copies were a nominal charge (£1?). Now it is £11 per copy, regardless of how many you need. So if you need 10 copies it is now £110 rather than, say, £40.0 -

Looking at the replies it appears that we have been naive in thinking our docs were protected. Next time I do anything similar I'll video myself stuffing the envelope whilst I say "so this is the level of proof required to hoist an incompetent company and the insidiously choreographed excuses of it's management onto their own petard.

I have sympathy for you, but as you say, there is some naivety here. There are 3 points you could have lost something you are saying is irreplaceable.. the post journey outbound, in Capitas hands, and the journey back. None of those 3 points are infallible (famously so).
Hopefully it will turn up, but I have little faith in Capita to help you out (I work at a Capita contact centre). It will probably be in a couple of years, you'll just randomly receive it in the post with no apology.0 -

Do I want compensation? £11 for a replacement is nothing and not worth going through the motions for.
Putting a value on the loss of our precious doc is impossible and implausible to sue for it anyway.
As for the person above who found it odd that we value these docs above the level of a mere replacement, we also hold our parents docs and those of our wider family on both sides. Further; the signatories on our original doc were personal friends who are now dead. I trust this clarifies.

What would I really like?
Me, Matt Allwright and a posse of cameramen to ride over to Capita's Darlington offices and extract a cripplingly broadcast-able admission of inadequacy from a "nominated spokesman" ending with an offer to come back and re-interview him after he has re-engineered his woeful processes.
I am also surprised that you would send a document that you value so much in the post which everyone knows isn't 100% reliable.
Considering that you could have got another document for £11, i have to ask why did you send them the copy you value so much?
A family member recently asked for a birth certificate that i look after to show to someone. I said i'll give them a good copy because i don't trust them to not loose it (they have lost another copy already). So i certainly wouldn't send one in the post :rotfl:0 -
It may be that the certificate was not removed from the envelope, particularly as there was more than one document in the envelope. Unless they were folded together.
I had that with document sent to an insurance company. When I insisted that the document had been included they recalled the envelope from the post store and sure enough, the document was still in the envelope.0
