Kitchen quote increases after design work?

Hi all,

I've just paid £500 for a company to design my new kitchen, after they quoted £9,500 for the work. However, they've now come back to me and said that they've had to adjust the quote in light of the design, and now they've increased the quote to £14.5k! As far as I can tell, the changes are negligible. Our budget was £10k. Is this a common thing?

Why are you paying to get a kitchen designed?

Ref the quote, hard to say without detail of quality of kitchen and items. But normally companies provide the design free. Maybe this is a 'whatever they can wear' outfit

    Sounds a bit like this:
Bait-and-switch is a form of fraud used in retail sales but also employed in other contexts. First, customers are "baited" by merchants' advertising products or services at a low price, but when customers visit the store, they discover that the advertised goods are not available, or the customers are pressured by sales people to consider similar, but higher priced items ("switching").
Say they can do your kitchen for £9500 and charge £500 for the design then suddenly increase the price of the kitchen by 50% fully expecting you to decide not to go ahead.

They have earned a nice tidy sum for designing a kitchen, something that probably took a couple of hours by someone using a computer with the relevant design software on it.
