cross meter - can I still initiate a switch?

Options
Hi, I have just moved into a new build and basically, the meter serial numbers have been mixed up with another plot. I confirmed this with british gas/a 'burns' test this morning.
I was just wondering if I can still initiate a switch to another supplier or do I have to wait? British gas are aware of the correct meter serial number providing the supply to my flat, as well as the MPRN number and have raised an enquiry to get this changed.
I was given the correct MPRN number by the developer but the meter serial number is different and has been switched with plot 61 (I am plot 65) I hope this makes sense?

Would appreciate any input!

I would wait until the cross meter situation is solved.

There could be a few complications which might hinder your switch, or those complications might prevent you from switching entirely.

Plots and serials and a big mess.

    It always happens.

Yes you can probably switch, however the only reason I can see to do it before sorting it out is to avoid paying the higer costs on your real meter which will not work out.

If both plots are with the same supplier you should get it sorted quicker.

(and TBH I think getting on t he best tarrif of any old supplier is pretty much equal these days unless you want to chance the bottom of the barrel suppliers for a discount that will probably make you pay more upfront, so you never really see it).
  • thank you, i have decided to stay with british gas for now until the crossed meter situation is sorted, however it feels like they are making a right mess out of it. They have now made me 2 gas accounts - one with my plot number, one with the flat number, and despite explaining this is the same address they are insisting to close one, however i don't know which one to close because i don't know what one relates to the right serial number. ARGHHH, this is my first time having to deal with energy, every other property i've had has been bills included and this is stressing me out.

no point in getting stressed out but when you've established which meter is yours (presumably the one in your dwelling) make sure you take weekly reading and save the info (take photo's if possible) so you can identify your consumption. Make sure the meter serial number is in the piccies as well.

Plots, flat numbers and meter serial number and metering points can all get confused and it's really down to the builder/developer to ensure that the correct info is given to the supplier.

You just need to try adn keep calm, identify which one is yours and keep meticulous records until it all gets sorted out.
