The electricity reading on my smart meter doubles every time Martin Lewis is on the TV - it went up to 4096 times what it should be on Friday alone.

I'm actually quite surprised that MSE are even telling people to disconnect their electricity meter from the mains even in a joke post :rotfl:

Nevertheless, energy firms are warning customers to act carefully and err on the side of caution – don't just smash your meter with a hammer! Here are the steps to follow:

Slowly unplug your meter from the mains. While you're doing this, don't make any sudden or unexpected movements – just try to act how you normally would around it.

I know electricity meters can't be unplugged but MSE are usually extra cautious, so to suggest actions that could kill someone (even in a jokey way) is unusual for them.

But they may have meant the In Home Display and put Smart Meter by mistake.

Yea, I am all up for a bit of fun too. As said, you can guarantee that a lot of people will read it as truth and I wouldn't find it odd for it to be in the press tomorrow. It's a bit like suggesting £350 million more a week for the NHS, some people will think it's real.

In the future, smart meter systems may be capable of controlling the consumer’s load (with their consent) by sending signals to their appliances to switch them off at peak times etc
