I very nearly did the same thing travelling from Ebbsfleet to a London rail station. Bought it online, had gone into the same page where I'd been an hour ago checking the prices, bought the ticket (thinking I was buying a cheap day return so you don't have to tick a return time). Collected the ticket at Ebbsfleet, thought strange only a receipt and one ticket.
Thank goodness as I approached the ticket barrier to start my journey, I looked more closely and noticed the ticket said single. Even more thank goodness, the gentleman at the barrier allowed me to pay 10p extra to change it to a return ticket, otherwise I'd have been in the same situation as the OP. Well I'd have found my ticket didn't work and had to pay the same amount to return.
