Pulled over today

Options
Need some advice. Was driving up a local main street near where I live and I went through a Pedestrian Crossing on Amber. The car behind me stopped on Red. In the opposite direction was a Police van who after seeing me go through, made a U Turn and came behind me with his lights on to pull me over. He said I had gone through a Red light and did I not see it. I said no I didn't see the Red light. He cautioned me then proceeded to issue me with a ticket.

Do I just pay the fine, do I get points?

Amber means stop, the only difference to a red is that under amber there is statutory defence if you were unable or it is dangerous to stop. However if any part of your vehicle passes the stop line when the light is on red, then the offence is complete. Is it possible that you passed the light when it changed to red ? If so that would make the amber defence null and void.

3 points and £100 if a fixed penalty is offered.

Does the officer have video evidence?
You could try and defend it, if it gets that far.
Otherwise it's his word against yours.

To stop at amber the time delayed would have been less than the time in battling the system and the stress involved.

The offence is commited if any part of the vehicle crosses the stop line on red (or amber, unless you couldn't stop safely). It may well be that the light was amber when you saw it from the driver's seat, but turned red before the rear bumper crossed the line.

Another amber gambler feels the long arm of the law breathing down their neck.

    Don't be an amber gambler.

    Yes and yes.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see amber being enforced. I see lots of cars proceeding through red lights as a matter of course nowadays.

Pretty much. Busses don't have a great time with it either.
