I've tried to switch e-on electricity tariff for my 86 year old mum today.
However mum doesn't want the hassle of having a smart meter fitted - so "No Smart Meter - No Fixed Tariff!!" 😡😡😡😡(Blackmail??!!)
🤬🤬🤬🤬
Anyone know of a (big 6) provider that doesn't insist you have a smart meter to get a good fixed deal please?

  • Hi,

what is the hassle about getting a smart meter fitted?

She has nothing to do except let the meter changer in and let him out, get a note of old meter readings and new meter readings.

She will be off-supply for less than an hour while the replacement meter is fitted.

Presumably you are looking after her financial affairs - so no meter readings for you.

Of course it's not blackmail. You have the option to take a tariff that does not require a smart meter, however you wont get the advantageous discounts that having one might bring.

Although having a smart meter is not a legal requirement the government are putting pressure on the suppliers by sanctions or even fines if they are not achieving their rollout targets. This means that the supplier have to try and "incentivise" customers to accept one.

The easy way to do it is to offer lower cost tariffs for those who take on a smart meter. It also has the advantage that it should reduce the cost for suppliers in a similar way that DD payments are are cheaper and easier to collect so most lower cost tariffs require DDs in their T&C's.

You have the option to choose which tariff you want - its not blackmail
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

This tariff you have chosen from Eon could be one of these which only is available if you have a smart meter fitted. Check the terms and conditions of this tariff
.. Eon would be acting against the current law if they insisted on a smart meter if the t/c s did nt state it was mandatory.
None of the big 6 insist on fitting a smart meter for most of their tariffs but I expect they all have one of their best tariffs to be dependent to agreeing to have a smart meter fitted.
This is because of the misguided Tory energy minister who changed the rule and gave people the choice , which is pretty ridiculous if they wanted a smart meter
The previous Labour government made smart meters mandatory as did nearly all the countries in the world who have installed them.

Hello onesixfive and already some great advice on here - thanks all.

Smart meters aren't mandatory and your mum can opt out if she wishes. By choosing one of our current Fixed Tariffs, she only agrees to be contacted about smart meters. As I say, your mum can turn them down. At this point, our advisor will talk about the options available at that particular time.

Also, it might not be possible to fit them as they're not available everywhere yet. This won't affect the tariff as your mum can stay on it even where we're unable to fit smart meters.

As matelodave mentions, smart meters have reduced running costs compared with classic meters and we're able to pass this benefit on to customers taking up these meters.

Like Robin9 says, your mum or you could also benefit from not having to read the meter. Readings taken remotely will be used to help keep her bills accurate.
