PPI from mortgage with the woolwich - now Barclays

We had our mortgage through the Woolwich, starting around 1977, and looking through some old paperwork we noticed that PPI was stated and a monthly amount to be paid.
As Barclays now look after the Woolwich accounts I contacted them via the online claim form.
We finished paying off our mortgage in 2003 but when we sent our claim in to Barclays say they have no record of the account, despite us having the account number.
Our bank, RBS, cannot give us any confirmation of payment as it is longer period than the time they keep records for.
We appear to be unable to pursue this any further. Any advise would be gratefully accepted.
Kind regards Leighton

1977 is very early for PPI (not impossible though)
Are you sure it's not life insurance or critical illness?
Assuming it is PPI and it was a monthly agreement then the mortgage alone is not enough for them to find it, particularly if they can't even find the mortgage. 15 years after the account is closed it's not surprising they don't have any records left, either provide your own copies or leave it beSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

This predates the building societies act and the financial services act. So, it places it before the period of own brand products. Typically they used local agents or agencies rather than their own product at that time.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). It's not a claim, it's a mis-selling complaint.
What where your reasons?0 -
If they have no records and you have no records your complaint is over.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0
