Disconnecting phone (NTL) cable from socket

Hi all
Tidying up my house and want some advice on the following:

I have a 'master' (Slave?- see http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=11039&ts=50921)
phone socket where my landline is plugged into. Out of the socket, i have an extentension cable if you like, it goes out of the house, upstairs, and back in to provide a phone socket upstairs.

I want to know whether I can just cut off this (unused) cable and pull it out and bin it? Or maybe it's NTL's property..or is it dangerous? Do i need to sellotape the cable end when i have cut it off?

thanks

Oh, PS

I have an old BT cable socket next to it..after speaking to BT ages ago, they have said I don't have a BT line connected..does this give me the green light to pull out the old cable and chuck away the socket box that is currently on my skirting board?

thanks!

if you undo the socket box you will see the extension cable connections inside, just snip them all with snips or scissors. and discard any old cable.
make sure you leave the live incoming cable, alone.

same goes for the bt box/cable.
very unlikely that anyone is going to come and claim the boxes. they cost pennies to them.

  • hi there

thanks very much for your reassurance. I had a think and i thuoght it seemed common sense, and i would be a) ok to do it, and b) safe, and yes! I haven't been fried alive!
Leaving the BT line as it is as even though i am not connected to BT, there is a physical line that goes from the slave socket all the way to the BT pole on the street, so if i cut it, the whole thing has been cut if you see what i mean!

Thanks again for taking the time to respond :-)

There might come a time when you want the BT line again, what with ever more competitive offers around for bundles of services. If you remove the socket it might make it hard to switch. You could label all the connections, then remove the socket so it is a DIY job to put it back it if needed... we keep both NTL and BT sockets ready in case.
  • good point buglawton, cheers

its very unlikely that the bt wire is direct from the pole in the street into your master socket box.
there is usually a small simple junction box first, just inside the house somewhere.
(brown or grey color mostly. if old)
