I went to an exhaust type garage and looking at the exhaust the guy said I needed a new clamp for the mid pipe and one of the backbox as they had gone. He wants to charge me £40 for this but I think surely this is a bit much for some clamps?

He is not charging you for clamps but for his time. £40 seems a reasonable minimum for a car going in to me (especially if parts are in that), but I have no idea where you are from.

I am sure the parts are under a fiver, fit them yourself if you can.

£40 less vat £33.33 less parts call it £5 =£28.33

The old clamps will be rusted on and a g1t to get off so £28 labour seem cheap to me

I've done 'em myself in the past and wished I hadn't, and that's with reasonably good kit.
Think of the cost of parts, of having the lift tied up, and the gear to cut the old ones off, and the know-how, and the fact that everybody hates exhausts, and I reckon that's about 40 quid.
In other words I agree with the others.
  • Buy a pair of ramps. You will need them for other jobs anyway. Get the WD40 out and take it off yourself.. The clamp nuts usually come off surprisingly easy compared to suspension parts..A hacksaw/bolt cutters possibly may be needed but unlikely. I ve done many over the years and can t recall ever having a problem with any exhaust clamps

Are we talking hanger bracket or a couple of clamps?

Hanger bracket and rubber mounts to hold the back box.

    That's cheap!
  • Threads like this are why I’m trying to get out of the trade - offer a good rate for work and it’s usually met with ‘seems expensive, Google says it should be a tenner’

Wages don’t pay themselves, rent and electric for lights and ramps don’t pay themselves either.
You’re not buying a couple of clamps, you’re paying for the service and knowledge to have them fitted too!
