Do you have any idea of the number of problems caused by individuals cancelling direct debits?
It is NOT necessary to cancel a direct debit. It is highly unusual for direct debits to be taken when nothing is due and in any case any such erroneous payments would be covered by the direct debit guarantee.
You have learned a valuable lesson for the future. Don't cancel direct debits (or at least not until several months have passed).0 -

You will always get a final bill after you cancel a contract.
Phoning up then cancelling the DD straight away is a big no-no0 -
Could it be worth asking Halifax to refer this to their underwriters, explaining the problem. If they see you have a steller record of paying your bills but this is obviously a genuine error (as you are not gonna default for £13 lol) they should be able to manually approve your mortgage.
You are a ideal mortgage candidate!0
