NCD on Car Insurance

I recently went on a comparison site to get some quotes for my car ins. Out of curiosity, I entered that I have no NCD (in actual fact, I have some 15 years with my current insurers with whom I been for the last 9 years.

Anyway, I was very surprised to find out that several quotes came out cheaper than my renewal premium. The cheapest one is £100 cheaper. So my question is, does NCD really make a difference to premiums or is it just a gimmick. Perhaps NCD only makes a difference once you have 4 years or more and have it protected.
Any comments please as I am completely baffled!!

Chances are your renewal premium isn't very competitive. I've seen mines double sometimes.

As mentioned above, you need to compare apples to apples i.e. compare the comparison site quotes with no NCD and 15 years (or maximum) NCD.
