Switching again due to liquidation - how to proceed?

Hi there,

Recently moved back to the UK and into short term (9 months) rented accommodation. A company alerted by the renting estate agent contacted us and suggested switching our dual fuel from the EDF standard tariff we inherited. Unfortunately they suggested switching to Northumbria Energy who went into liquidation 3 days after we switched to them ;-) We are now apparently being moved to SSE Standard tariff but we don't yet have any details regarding account numbers etc with SSE.

My question is do we HAVE to wait to switch or can we start the process now. If we try to switch will it complicate matters (assuming we can switch now) or do we have to wait (and keep pay over the odds for our gas and electricity) They said that they would be in touch soon with details of the new tariff of the deemed contract but that was 11 days ago now.

Any advise from those experienced in these matters would be greatly appreciated.

Wise to wait for switch to complete or you may find yourself between two stools and no one wanting to know about an account you do not have

I've been in a similar position to yourself where Our Power Energy failed and was taken over by Utilita. I initiated a switch to ScottishPower one week after Utilita took over control on 31st Jan. (on paper) to give you an idea of the time scale. Started the switch on 7th Feb.

Perhaps luck, Utilita confirmed my account number as being the same as I had with Our Power very early on within 2 days

If I were you, I'd phone SSE now to have your account numnber confirmed rather than waiting on correspondence from them.

I don't know if you have to have had your account number issued first before commencing a switch, if it were me I wouldn't bother about that matter too much.

Again if it were me, I'd just start your switch now, bearing in mind what will stop or complicate a switch is if your old supplier is still listed on the National Database when your selected suppliers asks to switch over. However, there's always a 14 day cooling off period, which as in my case the supplies had switched from Our Power over to Utilita by that time ready for ScottishPower to request application to switch.

There is a website to check when you gas is switched over on the National Database but nothing similar for electricity
