Hi I hope this is the right thread. I am movng home at the end of November and want to get my mail redirected, I know Royal Mail let the new owners know that my mail is being redirected but do they let them know my hew address, I would rather they didn't know this. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks shrewdal

Royal mail send a letter to the new occupiers, letting them know that mail for 'x' is being redirected, but they don't give out your new address as far as I recall.
However, the system is not perfect, and not all mail might be redirected, so it would be in your interests to let the new occupiers know your new address, to forward the bits that get missed.
Also don't forget how long it takes to set up a redirection..send off the form and pay now, as it does take time.0 -
If you click the 'find out more' link at the bottom of this page under the bit about data protection it should answer your question...

short answer - no they can't tell them if you don't want them too.0 -
re-direction is a pain lots of my mail never arrived or a month late, its ok if your unable to contact persons before hand but I wouldn't use the service again.0

As said before, it is not a perfect system and some things seem to fail to be re-directed so it's best you get changes of address on all your stuff asap. I took out 3 months re-direction starting 1st August - so it expired on 1st November - I did not extend it as I'm only missing the junk mail now :rotfl:Strangely though, I'm still getting one or two things a week that have been re-directed even though it's way past the expired date

RM don't give the new address, though its can be easy to find it out. Wait for mail to arrive that hasn't been redirected, take it in to the sorting office and they'll look up the address in front of you.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I moved into my new place in August and the previous owners had a mail redirection. I only know this because they told me (and left a forwarding address too). Royal Mail did not tell me there was a redirection in place, and to the best of my knowledge did not tell my purchaser that I had one. Can't understand why they would anyway, as it is not the new owners business what arrangements the old owner has with the Post Office.0

There's a box to tick on the form ... it confirms that a letter will be sent to your old address in all cases, but your new address will only be revealed if you tick the box.
Re-direction is quite precise ... it relies on the letter being correctly addressed, using the correct name. Any errors in the name used by the sender could result in the mail going to your old address anyway.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

It's not that concise.
They only re-direct per surnames from that address.
That said, I have received redirected mail addressed to the new tenants in my house.
Yes, they do have a different surname ;o)
I think that there is a lot of mail which has not been re-directed, either that or they have been redirected but they have not been delivered to my new address abroad(

What we've got here is....... failure to communicate.
Some men you just can't reach.

Only if you tick the box to confirm that the entire household is moving.
If you think about it .... what would happen on divorce with only one party moving out? In this case, you don't tick the "whole household" box and mail is redirected specifically on the full name of the person moving out.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

If you haven't got the form from the PO yet, you can view it online. In particular, the last line under part 1 of the form is the bit you're interested in.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0
