What's this about?
There's a great new website that raises funds for charity by getting its sponsors to make a donation for every user it gets; but you've got to play a game to earn it.
To donate rice is very simple, simply go to Free Rice and there is a word listed with four possible definitions. All you need to do is guess the correct definition and for every word you get right 10 grains of rice will be donated to the World Food Programme.
This is very similar in concept to The Hungersite (read a full article on how that works) which has regularly been featured in the weekly e-mail.
How many people can it feed?
One cup of rice contains about 1,000 grains of rice which is roughly enough to feed someone for a day. You can easily clock up a few thousand grains of rice in 20 minutes depending on how good you are and how addicted you find it! Plus there is no limit to how much rice you can donate per day.
Who pays for the donated rice?
The rice is paid by advertisers that have banners at the bottom of the page. It's basically an advertising site where the profit is donated to charities.
Is it legit?
The site is totally legit, we've checked with the World Food Programme and it has confirmed that free rice is raising funds for it. It also has a sister site, Poverty.com, which is all about raising awareness of poverty and starvation. There is no political, religious or corporate affiliation.

yes, I realise I may appear cold and heartless a lot of the time.0 -
But isn't the donation on the hunger site one click = 1 cup?
Not so time consuming and a tad more generous than 10 grains per correct word guess, methinks.
If you don't have 20 minutes to spare to play this game, then the hunger site
http://www.thehungersite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=1
also has automatic links to some other 1-click charities: Child Health, Breast Cancer, Literacy, Animal recue and Rainforest.
You can click them all in turn in less than a minute .0 -
At first I was very sceptical about this. My first thought about this was that it would be easier to buy a bag of rice from the supermarket, but then you'd have to post it back to the third world, creating pollution en route, so it could be used to feed the person who grew it in the first place. Involving the UN also introduces an administrative overhead that makes it seem a very expensive way to buy cheap food.
But then I looked at http://www.freerice.com/totals.html and found that they are now funding enough rice to feed 200,000 people per day, not bad considering they started from nothing at the beginning of last month. So, regardless of whatever shortcomings it might have, it certainly seems to be doing a lot of good.0 -
Well quite enjoyable but could only get level 42 still lots of rice.
Not going to be making a habit out of it though!

:jTo add to debate on helping charities by clicking I've moved away from Google for most searches now and use: everyclick.com/uk. Nominate your favourite charity and every time you search through the website your charity benefits. Must be a win/win!0

Love the "Free Rice" game. I have also been doing the "Hunger Site" and its other links for a long time now. Can't face breakfast until I do!
Have you got 10p to a £1 to spare: -

Rice game is so good, is addictive but good innocent fun. Got people in the office playing it lunchtime. Much better than me bidding on ebay for rubbish.
Thank you for the tip.0
