appliance insurance

Options
I have my white goods insured with Legal and General. Costs me around 30 quid per month which covers tumble drier, dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer. This is for repairs and if they cannot repair I get a new one. Trying to tighten my belt at the moment but not sure whether to keep these on or not. It's nice to know if they break down or die on me it isn't going to cost me anything to get them out but it also is quite a commitment each month. Do people think it is worth it? As yet I haven't had to call them out.

How many times have you claimed on this policy ? Put that £30 a month away in a savings account, you will have enough to repair or replace as necessary in no time and likely a nice holiday every few years !

Legal and General, Did not know they did appliance repairs? usually house ins etc.

£30 per month! My self personally no, not worth it.

Would put the £30 into savings account etc and pay what is required if anything does require repair.

tumble drier, dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer.
No oven/hob or cooker insured for that money?

    £360 per year in premiums.
Each of the 4 appliances cost around that £360 (or less) for basic, non-integrated machines.
So one machine in four needing replacement per annum and you are cost neutral.

Shop around and you may be able to get quality appliances with 5 year warranties included for not a lot more money when one of yours goes 'phut'.

Self-insure by putting that money in a regular saving high interest account. DO NOT just spend the £30 each month until you've an appliance- or two's-worth saved!

Sorry, I meant Domestic and General. All appliances bought from AO and they set up the insurance for me.

What you pay in 4 years has purchased our replacement appliances over the last 21 years.

Keep paying your £30 a month and over 21 years you will have paid over £6000 more than we did.

Purchased items from AO and never had insurance added.

it's a gimmick tbh and often the T+C are not in your favour than if you bought it yourself

  • Hi there
I bought the appliance repair cover as at 13.25 a month it was about 10 quid more expensive than the repair (heat pump tumblers!)

It's broken (Hotpoint heat pump tumber) again, however I note they say that you will be liable for the repair if you cancel before 25.1.20, which is the renewal date and I've already paid the cost of the repair and more.

This reads to me as if they're trying to force me into another year, when this wasn't made clear on the phone nor in the sign up documents (I've kept them all)

My question is (a) by the 28th of this month I've fully paid my premiums how can they try and say I'd be liable for a charge I've paid and (b) has anyone come across this with D&G appliances?

A free tip from me - avoid Hotpoint heat pump tumblers like the plague. It's not even 3 years old and its broken 3 times!

    Thanks

I think you might have misunderstood it. There is a difference between cancelling the policy and not renewing it.

If it's set up to auto renew and you don't want to, you need to phone them up and tell them you don't wish to renew it. DON'T say you wish to cancel as that effectively stops the current policy immediately.

If you don't renew, you will be covered up until the renewal date.
