What about the poss impact on your credit files? This number of searches would raise questions I'd have thought and could affect his ability to raise a mortgage for instance? Humdinger

The checks are slowly being removed by the companies in question . So no long term impact hopefully. I'm just annoyed at 118118 money they seem to have allowed this to happen by not checking as they should

As previously stated a lenders decision to lend is theirs to make, some lenders issue the card and do additional checks upon activation (before the card can be used) - you are not going to get anywhere with this other than to annoy yourself and possible the poor complaint handler at 118118 who has to deal with your complaint - the business makes a commercial decision and they will continue to do so until it becomes more profitable to do it another way I’m afraid.

Life is too short, use your time and effort on ensuring you do not become victim to this kind of thing before and do not dwell on what ‘could’ve been’.

The cynics in here will think it's all about compensation!

Generally in our legal system you don't get financially compensated for stress or spending time sorting things out.

I'd make a complaint to 118118 and set out in detail why you think they behaved incorrectly, also say you want compensation for the time and detail the calls you've had to make (include any out of pocket expenses as well).

They might offer you some "go away money". I got £15 from natwest because I disagreed with one of their policies (it was a dumb policy that only they do) and the customer service agent tried to tell me that I couldn't complain about bank policies, only if they failed to implement them. I was trying to get them to change their policy, but getting some money for the time was a welcome bonus. It avoided them paying the ombudsman to tell me to go away.

Paying a solicitor is a waste of money.

Some big differences there... I presume you were a NatWest customer so was in their interest to give GOGW.

As consumer is not 118118 customer, I wouldn’t be certain he would even be considered an eligible complainant in eyes of FOS given no impact to him... also no reason to offer GOGW if not a consumer they want to try and retain business.
