Late Afternoon Sun On Windows Problem?

We get late afternoon sun shining in the front windows which forces us to shut the blinds and curtains in order to see the TV, some neighbours have invested in these canopy things which serve as a porch roof and go across the front window blocking out the sun. My porch has a different shaped roof so would need coming off and replacing for me to have the same set-up.

I don't have a bay window and wondered if that might solve the problem rather than a canopy, i know one woman who has moved her living room around so she can watch at the back without the sun problem.

Seems a bit of a drastic solution for a relatively trivial problem. Can’t you just move the room around or watch TV at other times? Light-coloured blinds must block the direct sunlight without making the room too dark.

It seems drastic but maybe because it was so sunny last summer compared to previous years. Someone suggested to me one of those paracel things you see on Australien homes.

We bought some reflective film for our windows at the back of the house as this was a problem for us and made the kitchen and back rooms really hot in the summer as well.

I purchased it from ebay and fitted it myself, it was not difficult - it has made a big difference, and wasn't that expensive - would this be a solution.

Since you suggest "any ideas welcome"... if the sun is out, go out for a walk instead of watching the telly. Maybe take up gardening.... take up birdwatching.

For me, the idea of shutting more sunlight out goes against the grain...

While I'm with Dafty and far too busy after retirement to sit and watch telly till after dark, I do remember having the same problem when I was working and the kids were at school.

We'd all pile into the front room at tea time and then be blinded by the sun when we wanted to slob and watch some mindless drivel on the box.

All we did was pull the curtains. It worked. The end.

Me too. If there’s late afternoon sun, I’m going to be in it! I can empathise though as a late convert to sun worship. The sunny days of my childhood and teenage years were spent indoors with curtains closed.

I work from home and my office window is south facing and it used to get very hot as I often used to have to close my door as the kids could be noisy when I was on calls.

I had reflective film fitted to the windows which has made it a bit darker but blocks out a lot of the glare and stops the room heating up. I had mine done by a local company (on expenses) but I am sure you could DIY.

We also fitted the reflective film to our patio doors. Our problem was sun damage to the carpet which fitting the film solved.
