Selling a commercial debt question

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone can tell me, is it legal to sell an ex client's commercial debt on to an individual as apposed to a debt purchasing company?

I've been quoted up to 50% of the invoice value from some specialist debt purchasing companies yet the individual is only asking for 20% which would save me the best part of £1,300 on the transaction.

Also is there any legal criteria to sell the debt? As in informing the debtor that it has been sold on and who to etc or is that up to the new debt owner to carry that out in their efforts to recuperate it (we're not exactly on speaking terms as in they don't respond to my calls, emails or letters).

Thanks in advance :)
