Many thanks for that. We'll give them a call. We know they've taken the money but they haven't acknowledged despite a request, so we've no way of knowing they've credited the correct years.
When I phoned HMRC they said they would put a note on my file that I wanted to pay 2016/2017.

Furthermore, the 18 digit reference HMRC gave me included the digits 73320 and £733.20 is the amount required to fill the gap in 2016/2017.

Nevertheless, I will still be keen to see the gap cleared on my personal tax account online.

Paid by faster payment on Fri 29/3/19 and when I phoned today they confirmed receipt on the same day. The HMRC rep said he would apply it immediately to 16/17 and my personal tax account online was immediately updated. My pension forecast also updated immediately by £244 pa.

FWIW, we phoned HMRC and they said they had got the money and they confirmed they had applied it to the correct years. So hopefully all is well. They said they do not send acknowledgments, unless requested. When I pointed out we had requested one, they had no explanation except an apology.

Paid on the 27th February. Updated online on the 5th April so just over 5 weeks.
