overboarding lath and plaster ceiling

(I aready asked this on the quotes board but got no answers).

The ceiling in my kitchen is lath and plaste. I think it's reasonably sound - it's not sagging - but it has been patch repaired in the past and is very rough and uneven. A builder suggested that rather than pulling the whole lot down (and creating an enormous mess) it could be boarded over with plasterboard. Anyone see any problems with this? He quoted £700 for a room 3x4m.

overboarding is quite common place.all it involves is fixing plasterboard over the existing wooden laths, by using a decent length dry wall screw at least 50mm then screwing to the existing timbers, then replastering.

the estimate is ridiculous, so he obiously doesnt want the job.

its a days work plus materials no more than the 200 mark that is how id price it anyhow.
