HELP! e-on Final bill

Hi,

Brand new to this, so please bare with me!

Just started renting in my first home, back in January. The house is a brand new property, I am the first ever tenant, in a coach house.
Apon moving into the property, I sorted my Gas and Electric supplier to a cheaper tariff one.

e-on energy, i guess who were the previous supplier, have sent me a Final bill for £105.56! I have not budgeted for this and struggling to pay for it.
Electric: 199kwh (ESTIMATED UNITS USED)
Gas: 126m3 / 1399kwh (ESTIMATED UNITS USED)

Now to me, this seems incredibly high. The ACTUAL electric used were 85.5kwh and gas was 64.552m3 / 716kwh, both taken from actual meter readings by self.
Can anyone help me out here? Do you see any discrepancies? Do you think this is a normal amount of energy to be used in an economic 2 bedroom "flat"?!

Back in January your first move should have been to contact the existing supplier (Eon) give them meter readings - -did you?

When did you switch to your new suppliers ? In the interim you pay Eon on their standard (ie expensive rate)
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Thank you for your quick reply.

All my energy was sorted through my estate agent and TenantShop?
So I was not even aware that e-on was the original supplier, and tenant shop just sorted me out with a cheaper company.
I moved into the property on 23rd January and switched on 25th January. Just looking through emails, the proposed supply start date was 15th Feb.

Lesson for the next time you move - never rely on landlords, agents or anyone else to arrange suppliers - read meters - do it yourself !

Did eon get the actual readings when you moved in. If not get in touch and give them the readings. Did your new company get initial readings?

You relied on someone else doing all this and getting you a cheap deal?

I would now put your estimated yearly usage into a comparison site and get your self a better deal with no one getting commission.

As already posted, it was your duty to register with the current supplier when you moved in
You were badly let down by both your L/Agent & Tenant Shop who would have known this

You owe Eon for the power you consumed from the day you moved in, 23rd January to February 15th when the Switch was completed
However, Eons bill is Estimated - You have the meter readings on the day you moved in, and those at the start of your new supplier.
Give these to Eon asking for an accurate Final Bill.

Hello JakTitch and welcome to the Forums.

Already some excellent advice on here - thanks all.

As above, we'll have supplied the energy from the time you became responsible for the flat until your new supplier took over. If we didn't have starting meter readings, we'll have used estimates instead. This can be changed if you're able to let us have accurate readings for the day you took over. We'll use these to rebill the account.

The closing readings will have come from the new supplier. They send us their opening readings and we use these to close our account. This stops the same energy from being charged twice. They come via a third party who checks they're in line with previous readings held for the property. They're shown as estimates as they're not from you or a meter reader.

Talk to us if you're struggling to pay the bill. We'll be happy to look at setting up a payment plan to spread the final balance over a more manageable period.

Hope the move went well JakTitch and you've settled in to your new home.

Since it's a brand new property there should be no previous records for its energy consumption so the data verifiers must have made a guess at usage as well as Eon.

As the rep says, if you have the readings from when you moved in and the closing reads when the supply was transferred, give them to Eon and ask for an accurate bill based on accurate readings.

Otherwise, you'll just have to pay the estimated bill.

Going forward, read the meters at least once a month and supply the readings to your chosen supplier.

EDIT - don't forget to also read your water meter on a monthly basis as well.

That's right D_M_E. As a new property, we won't have any past usage to go on. Unless we're given readings by the new occupant, builder or their agents, we'll estimate based on things like type and size of property, heating arrangements, levels of insulation, etc. If we've the contract for the development, it's likely our New Connections team will have this sort of information.

Smart meters might've helped here if we could've downloaded readings for the start date.

We're always happy to rebill to actual readings even, as here, the customer has left and the account is closed.

Jaktitch - I may have missed this - when you switched suppliers that supplier would have asked you for readings for on or about Feb 15th. What were they ?

As this is a brand new build - your meter readings when you moved in would have been about 00000 . In practise a little above because the builder would have commissioned the boiler etc.

Does the bill you have from Eon give readings for when you switched or is the bill just a routine bill ?
