Who pays for packaging when returning large faulty item?

“The box was so large I had to throw it out” when I read that I thought you’d bought a bed or a sofa...what you’re describing isn’t a particularly big box...have you any local music shops....having sold guitars and PA speakers , all requiring large boxes, asking them could be a good starting place as well.No two ways about this one: Anything Free is not a Basic Right..it had to be earned...by someone, somewhere0

How big is this wheel!0

Hahaha, well it was large in comparison to my tiny flat!
I probably should have mentioned, it's actually a hub motor built into a bike wheel, so its a bit thicker and rather heavier than a normal bike wheel, and also requires more protection on the sides. And of course, it is worth a bit more.
These are all very helpful suggestions, and I would eagerly take them up if the item wasn't faulty. But because it is, I feel like I shouldn't be having to expend all this effort while the seller does nothing, despite them being the ones in breach of contract. Particularly since if it arrives damaged, I lose out and have to chase up couriers for compensation, yet I wouldn't have to be sending it back at all if it worked .
However,, considering these replies I think I may be being too indignant!0 -
You threw the box out - no one made you.
If you ended up taking this to court to get a refund and it went before a judge, what do you think they would say? It's not unreasonable, given you threw the packaging away, for you to find some alternative.0 -
I had no reason to keep the box, unless the item was faulty, which I obviously shouldn't have to expect will happen. Also, as I said, I had nowhere to store it, so I would argue my circumstances forced me to throw it out
I would think it is less reasonable to expect someone to keep a large box for a year, just in case the item breaks, than it is to expect someone to pay out of pocket for replacement packaging in the event that the item they paid for is faulty0 -
Ask them to send a packing box so you can put the faulty item in it?0

Plenty of shops around that have boxes, go into 1 and ask if you could have a box.0

They would likely say that unless the OP agreed to return rejected goods, their only obligation is to make them available for collection. And that even if they had agreed to return them, it would be for the trader to cover the reasonable costs incurred in doing so.
No, no one made the OP throw out the box. But packaging is only now required because the goods failed to conform. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
