Is this some new law being in charge of or an adaption of an old law?

Over the years for one reason or another mainly breakdowns i have had several knocks on the window whilst asleep or just woken up with their presence.
I have always made sure the keys were not on me or in the ignition usually left on passenger seat. When the police visually see the keys they have either offered to repair or drive me home.

It's older than the internal combustion engine. Been on the statute book in one form or another since 1872

(The modern legislation is in the Road Traffic Act 1988 so even the current version of the law is hardly a new thing)
