TOTO Energy - SMETS1 meter compatibility
Hi All,
I'm looking to see if a Smart Meter expert can confirm the information provided to me from TOTO Energy re their SMETS 1 meters.
They fitted these to my house despite me specifically stating I would only take SMETS 2 when they became available.
I contacted them and they state:-
"Our Smart Meters are compatible with several other energy suppliers, and will retain their 'Smart' functions with them. SMETS 1 meters are perfectly accepted across the industry and only a handful of suppliers (some of the big six) are unable to use them as they have Smart Meters that are exclusive to them".
Can anyone confirm.
Thanks.

The decision has not yet been made if the Secure smart meters, fitted by Toto will be adopted on to the DCC, which would allow supplier interoperability.

There are quite a few different manufacturers of meters and each of them will have their own data collection facilities. Some of which will be the same as other suppliers and others will be different. Even meters from the same manufacturer may use a different data collector and so wont be directly interchangeable without a software upgrade.
That is the idea of the DCC to become a central data collector to which all meters (or a good proportion) will eventually be enrolled - this will need an "over the air" (OTA) software upgrade but will no doubt have to be done on a batch basis so they can transfer to the DCC
Depending on whether the meter is still operating in it's smart mode (ie still with it's original supplier) or has been abandoned because the customer has changed will no doubt affect the timescale of the enrollment.
Some meters havent yet been tested or qualified for enrollment so wont even get started until later this year - probably next.
Likewise it will depend on how keen your supplier or any other supplier will actually get on with it. They will have to revamp all their billing and data collection systems to transfer to the DCC
Assuming that there are over 10m meters already out there it's unlikely that it will be soon or trouble free so I wouldn't get to bothered about it.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

There is more on this subject here.
An acceptable level of security for the end to end smart metering system.
Whether the delivery of a potential solution in respect of the meter type in question is technically feasible.

Once a SMETS1 meter has been enrolled in the DCC it may not be withdrawn and operated outside the DCC0 -

No they haven't - they are correct in that they can be operated by some other suppliers. So it's possible that if he chose an appropriate supplier who also used the Secure meter that they would take them on and operate them in the smart mode.
The OP doesn't say that Toto specifically said they would work with the DCC.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Thanks all for the helpful replies.
It is important to remember that customers with first generation meters will receive an upgrade to restore full switching functionality.
The new second-generation meters will allow uninterrupted switching between suppliers. The first-generation meters can temporarily lose some of their functionality following a switch, but this just means you may have to read the meters yourself for a little while. This is a temporary situation because all benefits can be restored in future, after these smart meters are enrolled into the new national network. Smart meters which have already been installed will begin to be enrolled into this network 'over the air' without needing a visit from an installer. They will then be able to deliver all the benefits of smart, with any supplier.Verified Company

Thank you all for your replies.
My fixed term deal with TOTO expires in Dec 2019. Hopefully by then there will be an update to my SMETS1 meter allowing me to transfer to another supplier and still retain it's functions.
They could have avoided all this by just fitting a SMETS 2 as per my request in the first place.0 -

It is important to remember that this so called upgrade may require the fitting of a new replacement SMETS2 meter because it has already been established that not all first generation meters can be adopted onto the DCC, more inconvenience for customers.
This thread is specifically about the Secure SMETS1 smart meters and consultation regarding the possible adoption of these meters onto the DCC has not yet concluded.
I doubt very much if Mags05 Secure SMETS1 meter will be fully supplier interoperable by the end of this year!0
