Moving Home
Hi, we are moving next week from a house with just electric to a house with gas as well.
Our bill with our current electricity provider is quite high (due to old storage heaters usage) and we are tied into a contract. My plan is to transfer the electric to the new house with the payments being the same in order to reduce the deficit in our bill and start a fresh gas bill with a cheaper company with a separate payment.
Is this something we can do and how would I go about finding the cheapest deal? Thanks

Your power contracts are with the meters and cannot be moved from one house to the next. When you do move, your old account will close and you will need to open a new account with a new tariff.0

The Citizens' Advice info is excellent. Most important that you read meters at your old place when you leave, and new place when you move in. Ask the seller or landlord of the new place who the energy supplier is. You have to take energy from them from Day 1. Contact them straightaway, tell them you do not want a long term contract, you will take their standard tariff, but will be switching. If you do want to stay with your current supplier, they can start the switch process as soon as you move in, but it will be a new contract on a new tariff.
I did this last year, and I was switched after only 17 days on the "default" provider.0
