Maintaining Broadband Speed

I am connected at 2MB broadband and my usual actual speed is around 1840 and 242; however, when I have been connected for some time and I check the speed it can have dropped as low as 800. Is there any way of ensuring the speed is mainained or alternativly of monitoring the speed on an ongoing basis without having to go to speedcheck sites.
