How is this kWh possible?

Hi, have just moved into a new flat. It's a top floor 2 bedrooom flat, with what has been assesed as good/average. Have just had my first bill for gas and it shows usage of 1700 kWh...in my old place I hit a maximum of 1044 kWh...using gas central heating, gas hobs and combi boiler. In the new place I have electric cooking, just boiler for hot water and heating...how can it be possible that a better insulated, more modern place has doubled my gas usage?

Is there anythign I can check (not smart meter)> thanks

Anthony

  • Hi,

check readings on bill, has it been estimated, did you supply a start reading when you moved in?

Is that for 30 days? Actual readings? (provide them if you have them). Combi. How many hot baths? Which room is thermostat in? What temp is it set too?

As said, did you read the meter when you moved in and set up an account with the supplier using the reading.

What is the reading now. You need to ensure that the bills/statements are based on actual meter readings and not estimates.

As always the advice is to read your meters regularly so you can understand what you are using and when so you can determine whats using it and do something about it. Like reducing your temperature settings, reducing the amount of time the boiler is running, using less hot water etc.

Waiting for a bill to come in is too late as you've already used it and you don't know why.

Finally have you made sure that the bills is for the meter that actually feeds your flat. It's not unheard of for flats or conversions to be wired to a different meter and that people have been paying for someone else's energy. Especially if the meter isn't actually in your flat but downstairs somewhere with all the others.

You are reading the meter yourself aren't you and not relying on someone else. The same for your initial reading, did you do it or did someone else,

Check the meter serial number against your bill and make sure that the meter responds correctly when you turn stuff on and off
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

Top flat - Is this a conversion or a purpose built block ?

If a conversion, check the loft for insulation if you can get access
