Can next door listen to my bluetooth earphones with built in mic?

Got my first set of Bluetooth earbuds and notice the microphone on them which I don't really want.

I have paired them to my mobile phone. When the Bluetooth earphones and on and my phone isn't what is to stop my neighbour pairing them and then listening to my calls when I use them.

Can Bluetooth earbuds work with two phones connected? (ie. Me and the neighbour listening!)

Will a bit of tape over the microphone fix it? Any other good ways of blocking the mic?

Any Bluetooth device I've used can only be paired with a single phone/tablet/laptop. So if it connected to your phone it can't be connected to your neighbour.

The way to test is to ask a friend to connect to your earbuds.

Surely they can only listen if paired and can only pair when you have selected pair on the earbuds and they have their phone in pairing mode. Maybe if they have some high tech snooping device they may be able to crack the system but not with a standard phone.

That depends. Bluetooth 5.0 introduced the ability to connect multiple devices together (one phone connecting to 2 speakers for example). They'd still need to pair with the device in question though.
