Disconnecting from gas?

I am just about to have a gas cooker replaced with an electric oven / induction hobs (I realise gas is cheaper but I prefer induction hobs and electric fan ovens).

The gas cooker is the only gas appliance in the house, and therefore we no longer need a gas supply at all.

Questions:

- I have a gas meter and pipes, but no actual gas appliances. Do I still need an annual gas safety check? (lodger is present so currently get this done annually).

- Can I / should I switch to single fuel with my energy supplier? It'd save me about £10 / year because the single fuel standing charge is slightly cheaper.

- Can I / should I get the meter etc completely removed or disconnected from the supply? Not sure of the costs / advantages of doing this really?

Any help appreciated!

Not only can I switch to single but you probably should do anyway. Taking both fuels from one supplier is "old hat"

If you don't want gas at all yes get the meter removed otherwise you will still have to pay a standing charge. Ask your supplier for costs (- not cheap)
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

We have a business contract with British Gas which is zero standing charge.

We were in a similar situation.

The Power company sent someone to disconnect the meter(It was not removed) and cap off the supply.

There was no standing charge to pay.

    Yes.
The annual safety check doesn't only cover appliances but also fittings and pipework so if there is a gas supply to the property, you must still have the inspection carried out.

Thanks! This sounds like a good option!

Interesting point, how much would you be checking on a visual check ?
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

All I can think of would be looking for corroded or damaged pipes and fittings and making sure than any blanking caps fitted are secure.
